I'm looking for advice on the best approach to upgrade an active site currently running DNN 4.

The server seems fairly acceptable- though it is running Windows 2003 and SQL 2000. I'm thinking it's time to just bring up a fresh install alongside the old site and cut over to it once everything is working.

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

As your server is running SQL 2000, you are restricted to how far you can upgrade as DNN 5.2+ requires SQL 2005, whilst DNN 7 requires SQL 2008 (and Windows 2008), check out http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

What Pingle said.

plus:

If you don't use 3rd party extensions, it should be easy to follow the upgrade path. Otherwise, make sure that all modules will work with your "target" version.

Backup the site and the database before every upgrade. After the upgrade, check if everything works. Upgrade modules/skins/skin objects/whatever you need to run with the version you just upgraded to. If everything works fine, backup the site and the database, and upgrade to the next version etc.

I would also recommend to do this in a testing environment, note every step you do and then do the upgrade on your production environment.

Best wishes
