I doubt that you will benefit from a move to using a closed source software, where only a few developers are able to identify and solve issues. Even paying for support does not guarantee that you'll get the best solution in a reasonable timeframe, I fear.
Oh, I have no problems waiting for a response for a day or two, as long as I know that I "will" get a response. It is when I get to topics that I wait for over a year on with no response that I realize that the community support is no longer there.
Unfortunately, you are correct, that the DNN community did shrink significantly, which has been caused imho by bad communication, raising fears in the community and bad decisions like ripping off all modules from the frameworl package, leaving new users with a Torso of a platform, that doesn't really attrack People.
Thank you for your input, I think you are correct on this... The big question that I (and probably many others) have is if this is simply a phase and the community aspect will return, or if this is a transition period where we gradually moving away from the community contributions completely.
I know nobody has a good answer to this right now, but it is a topic that needs to be really thought about. Many thousands of organizations depend on the community edition, and need to make future plans accordingly. Speaking from the point of view of K-12 organizations, the majority of them will not be willing to pay the big bucks required for the professional version. We are a bit better off in technology than the majority, so we might go that route.
