I am trying to install the latest version of DNN Community Edition on Windows Server 2012 using SQL Server 2012 (not express). When I open the install wizard, it tells me that it can't connect to the database but doesn't even allow me to enter connection information.

Switching between Default and Custom does not change the error.
I can succesfully connect to SQL Server using Management Studio using both Win auth and Sql auth.

I have created a dnnadmin user on the server and tried to set that up in web.config.
I have made sure that the web app in IIS is configured to use .NET 4.0.
I have given the current user and the network service full rights on wwwroot\inetpub.
I have tried turning Windows Firewall off.

What am I missing?

Did you create a db? DNN does not create the database. At install it expects a connection sting that identifies where the database is and then populates it with tables, stored procedures and data.

The DB must be there first AND the account that DNN runs under (the App Pool) must have the rights to run DLL in the database.

In cases such as this I recommend creating a udl file on the webserver and double clicking to enter your settings - if it works open the udl file in notepad and you'll see a correct connectionstring - typically this approach provides a richer error e.g. you've misspelled something or forgot to set your user as a dbo to the database - see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...(v=vs.71).aspx

Thank you for the prompt responses.

@Richard: I do have a database defined called DotNetNuke. My DNN webapp runs under DefaultAppPool, so I added user "IIS APPPOOLS\DefaultAppPool" to my Security\Users node on the server and also on the database. Still no go.

@Cathal: I have followed the steps for creating a .udl file, and generating a connection string that way. "Test Connection" succeeds from the Data Link Properties Dialog, but not when I copy the string to web.config.

I have previously installed DNN succesfully on a different machine (Windows7) and did not need to mess with web.config. This got updated by the install wizard. The problem is that this time the install wizard does not allow me to specify connection information. It fails even before that, so my guess is that something's preventing it from discovering the SQL Service.

I found a way around this.

I was running the install wizard from Internet Explorer. When I run from Chrome, the app can freely connect to SQL. There must be some restrictions set up in this instance of IE that I was not aware of.
