Since it looks like this thread died out...

Is anyone else still having this issue? I'm running a pretty fresh install of 4.4.1 (IIS 6, SQL 2005) and having the same problem - .doc, .jpg, etc all open fine, but not .pdf files.

I've checked various things previously listed:

  • In the "Files" table, it correctly has "application/pdf" listed as the ContentType on the PDFs
  • I verified that I do not have compression enabled in IIS
  • The PDF files do not have spaces in the names, and I also tried files that do not have any other special characters
  • I have tried both uploading the file via the File Manager as well as directly copying (UNC path) the file to the folder
  • I have tried both IE and Firefox

If I reference the file directly (i.e. http://webhost/portals/0/subfolder/file.pdf) it opens correctly. If I try to open the file via a link (such as a banner or even inside the file manager, (in IE) it gives me the "open/save/cancel" prompt, I click open or save, then I just stare at the file download progress meter that never moves (in Firefox the download manager opens, but it never goes anywhere).

Ideas/hints/tips are greatly appreciated...

I think I've narrowed it down to th same issue with the link handler (which I assume also handles links in the file manager) that others have discussed.

On my banners, if I put the absolute URL to the .pdf and not use the "A File on Your Site" option, it opens the.pdf in a new window as expected.

Not desirable, but it works. Doesn' t help when trying to open from the filemanager, though. I haven't tried it yet, but from the sounds of everyone else, it may still be an issue using the Documents and File Repository modules as well - headache for the users.

The issue with pdf download seems to be lingering on since long. I would really appreciate to see an authoritative explanation  or acknowledgement of the issue from the core team which will act like a breather to all of us who are affected and are now trying to guess the reasons behind this issue (with very limited success). If core team has already talked about it on public forums, then sorry i missed it.

And to add to 'spaces-in-file-names' issue: i was also experiencing the problem that a file named "test document.doc" will download as "test" and MS-word won't open it. I then disbled the "Use white space filter" under host settings and everything was fine. A bug in the implementation of white space filter?.. i don't know!

Nope, not lingering any longer.  I've been struggling with this issue myself and just upgraded core to 4.5.1, documents module to 3.01.06 and links module to 3.03.07 and all pdfs now kick off the pdf browser plugin rather than starting an independent instance of Adobe Acrobat and all pdfs are now readable.

Good job core team.
