If external modules do not work well anymore with newer versions of DNN, then I would say it's normal if the issues are caused by documented breaking changes. These modules need to be maintained and upgraded. Many of these modules are too simplistic. I suggest getting a commercial module with good support.

WordPress is pretty good.. for what it's intended to do. It has a ton of developers, users, themes and plugins. However at some point, it can't meet needed requirements anymore and you will need a full feature CMS.

I've been really happy with DNN. I think most of it's troubles are actually reputational. You run into some folks in forums around the net who really hate it... I think mostly because they had a bad experience with an early version and never went back; or, because they are putting blame on bad extensions on a good platform.

I do think that there could be little more attention given to some basics that help make the system extensible and flexible for normal users. Specifically, I mean things like some better common/core module options - the kind that you shouldn't have to depend on the community for... and a more consistent effort at making everything as flexible as possible - like having many options to customize core modules to your purpose.

With all that said, this is a great platform. Further, the move into the services framework and the expansion of the resource management stuff will help make sure it's relevant for years to come... and that's good for everybody.

Mike

I've been progressing into module development and there is a real lack of good quality tutorials and documentation. There are some exceptions (the christoc templates are great). But a lot of the info on the main site is outdated (dnn 5 tutorials using the old DAL?) and compared to competitors, it's difficult to get going. Perhaps that's why the system is less vibrant? It also seems to be more common to have video tutorials which need payment.
