I'd never attempt to move a DNN install manually.. too many things can go wrong.. I use Evotiva DNN Backup to move my DNN installation which takes care of everything.
BTW 1and1 has a great deal on it's XXL VPS servers 6GB RAM, only $29.99/mo, I wouldn't run DNN on shared hosting, only dedicated/VPS.

Thanks everyone, I added the tempURL into the PortalAlias table, stopped the website and restarted it again. 

I typed in the temp URL and this directed the browser to the old site, which is still live while I made sure everything got established on the new site. 

I then deleted the tempURL entry I had added into the PortalAlias table. I then changed the existing main alias (the record with field IsPrimary set as True) to be same as the tempURL and it's all up.

I'll remember to change it back as soon as I've double checked everything.
