To upgrade your DNN installation I suggest you to install the FBackup free edition from here http://www.fbackup.com/

You can backup your DNN installation and database without stopping the application, it use shadow copy and you can use it for regular backup or in upgrade process!

I would not trust a file based backup tool with an SQL server database. FBackup say you should use their commercial product for SQL server databases.

I don't know where you have read this but I've installed free version and I'm able to backup DNN and DB file whitout disconnect DB or stop the application.

The comparison table between commercial and free use here

I read it in the link I quoted.

The comparison table does not say anything relevant to backing up SQL server db's

backup might work most of the time - but there might be situations, where you'll get an inconsitent database, if backing it up from file system.
