I am trying to setup version 7.04.01.  I have done the steps for setting up apppool security for the folders and IIS, etc.  I have installed other versions.

When I try to run the site to do the setup I get "Connection to the database failed"
Why am I getting this message before I even get to the install step that sets up the database name, etc?
What database is it trying to connect to and why is it trying to connect before the connection is defined?
I have not set up a database for the site and I cannot get to the step to do so.

It is trying to connect to THE DNN database on your SQL Server.

Since you have not created a database, you'll need to do that first. Do you have SQL Server Management Studio or something like that to create the database and it's user?

Usually you will want to check the radio button to use SQL Server. Then you fill in the data for the SQL server and the database name. After that, you would normally check/uncheck the box to specify a user and password for the database. All of this should have been specified when you created the database. The user must have database owner privileges.
