I read in another thread, that the license restriction is just the nag box, which you might be able to hide by applying CSS.

Thanks Mariette for the link.

Just tried to install and import. The import tool goes through verification and complains that Active Forums 3.7.8 is required and does not proceed. My version is 3.7.3
Any suggestions?

Thanks Sebastian. It would be lucky if it was like that. Any chance you can share the link to the post you might have seen or tips on how this can be done. Searched the forums but could not find anything suggesting this.

It seems that having Active Forums 3.7.8 is essential in the upgrade process as suggested in comments above and elsewhere:
