Our issue ended up being caused by installing ActiveReports pro edition on the machine. Removed the install and DNN8 went back to normal. Not sure what that install is doing to my website but it will be on hold now.

the issue is caused by the search index.
I suggest removing all files from /app_data/search folder and re-index.

Another symptom that might help.

A 404 error is generated  while attempting to add a new page by selecting a parent page. No error is recorded in event log.

Also I tried to synchronize files using Host File - Management (An error occurred while loading the folder content.) Not Found

None of the folders could be accessed for Synch. Any link I click would generate the same error. (An error occurred while loading the folder content.) Not Found
