OK, I'm a dumbass. I admit it. But I am having problems following the installation documentation (Version 1.0.03) of the DotNetNuke installation guide. I am trying to simply setup a local source installation on my PC against which I hope to do some module development. (I am familiar with use of DNN as I have used DNN on my personal website, configured by the ISP.) My operating system is WindowsXP Professional, and I already have MS SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Visual Studio 2005 installed.

The guide keeps jumping back-and-forth to older versions of DNN and their settings, making a lot of assumptions about already having experience with DNN installations, and it is not at all clear to me which settings I am supposed to change for version 4.x versus version 3.x. The net result is that after a couple hours of (blank) database creation, twiddling with settings, and flipping back-and-forth in the installation documentation, the only thing I can manage to raise is an error that when I browse to DNN, it tells me that I do not have permission to view the page (let alone initiate installation). But I have given my personal user account (which also has administrative rights) and the NETWORK AUTHORITY account FULL rights to the root and all of the child directories. Yet I get this error.

Can anyone provide any pointers as to what I am doing wrong?

I am having the exact same problem.  I have downloaded the DNN 4.3.3 Source Package and the documentation on how to install it.  I am running SQL 2005 Standard edition.  I am having the same trouble looking through the documentation flipping back and forth and getting the exact same error message not having permission to view the page.

Please help as I would like to start some module development.  Thanks.

I admit to having the same issue when starting with DNN 4.
The documentation is great and I am very happy that people put the effort in to make it.

But there are so many different configurations to consider you can wonder if you are doing the right thing.

So, I just did the things the same way as I did with DNN 3, and it worked fine.

1. unzip install package into a directory
2. Ensure your aspnet account has full file permission to that directory
3. Create an IIS virtual directory to point to it - ensure the default.aspx file and proper .net versions are set
4. Create and empty SQL server DB and a user with a sql server login
5. Update the web config to support that user and db
6. call up the site to start the install
7. Cross your fingers :)

I used to always forget two important steps that would eat up hours of my time.

  1. Make sure that all the right processes have the right permissions to your DNN directory.  I've always followed the following steps for this and have never run into any security problems
    1. right click on your dnn web root folder
    2. click the security tab
    3. click the advanced button
    4. check the inherit permissions box and click apply (after it's applied the inherit permissions box will no longer be checked but don't worry, it worked)
  2. Make sure that default.aspx is defined as a document for the website in IIS.
    1. right click on your dnn virtual directory in IIS
    2. go to the documents tab
    3. add default.aspx
    4. you can move it to the top of the list to improve performance by a tiny unnoticable amount of time
