  • you can use any SQL Server with any DNN version.
  • DNN3 core mods and module developement for DNN3 AND DNN4 needs ASP.Net 1.1 and VS2003
  • DNN4 core mods and module developement for DNN4 only modules needs ASP.Net 2.0 and VS2005 (VWD or any professional Edition)
  • to run DNN 4 in your IIS you need to have ASP.Net 2.0 installed and select ASP.Net 2 for the virtual directory of the web.

if you're just starting out then I suggest getting the Express (free) versions of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005.

To run DNN 4.x you'll need the .Net Framework 2.x and your OS should probably be Win XP Pro or Win 2000 Server.

To run multiple instances of DNN, I believe you only need to do a couple things.  First, set them up in seperate directories and virtual directories on IIS.  Then, make sure their configuration files point to different databases.  Finally, make sure to read the entire install pdf that comes with DNN.  It will save much headache.

Also, to answer your first question, yes, visual studio and sql server can both run on the Windows I specified simultaneously.

Ok..  so let's try to summarize all of this.

  • We can use one OS.  Preferably Windows 2003 or Windows XP Pro (these are both supported by MS).
  • We only need one MS DB server any version (Important)
    • If you decide on SQL 2000 or MSDE you can move your DB SQL 2000 or MSDE and later upgrade to SQL 2005.
    • If you decide on SQL 2005 you cannot move your DB to SQL 2000 or MSDE.
  • We can install multiple versions of Visual Studio to support ASP.NET ver 1.1 and 2
    • VS 2003 for ASP.NET 1.1 and DNN 3x
    • VS 2005 for ASP.NET 2 and DNN 4x
  • One instance of IIS with multiple virtual directories
    • Separate application pools for ASP.NET 1.1 and 2

Sound about right?  No virtual machines required?
Thanks.

Interesting that in my orginal post I had mentioned using Virtual enviroments for DNN testing development.  This is the setup that I eventually settled on and have been using.
WinXP Pro with multiple versions of Visual Studio.  VM Ware Server and 2 instances of Windows 2003 server.  One for hosting DNN 3.x and SQL 2000 and one for DNN 4.x and SQL 2005.  Each has their own custom security templates and can be configured to use my LAN or communicate with host only when disconnected from the LAN.   Then I saw this recent blog which confirms my strategy.

Thanks.
