I would like to develop a standard PC load for DNN development and I need your input on what would be the software requirements?  I don't think this has ever been asked before.
Here would be some of my requirements:
1) Ability to work with DNN versions 3x and 4x and future versions from the same computer.
2) Databases should be local to the computer.
3) DNN dev and skinning need to be included.

To get things started I had some thoughts.
Windows 2003 Server
MS Virtual Server or VM Ware Server (free)  This would allow for running multiple IIS hosts and dev instances.

Please list your software and configuration thoughts to help myself and others.

We run our installations on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard,
with Virtual Server 2005 R2, which I believe is now free as supposedly it's meant to be an integreal part of Longhorn Server.

for local developement you need at least WinXP professional (with .Net framework V1.1 and 2.0), MS SQL Server (e.g. 2005 Express Advanced), Visual Studio 2003/2005. besides for skinning the necessary tools for HTML and CSS design. I also like to have a Web-Server somewhere around, where I can test real situations.

I use windows 2003.

Visual studio 2003/2005

MSsql server both versions

On the above I clone all my clients and carry out development via the workstations.

I use Front page for skin development ( however you could use visual studio )

I use Mygeneration for module development. Macromedia Fireworks for skin graphics

If you use vs2003 on W2003 up your memory as much as possible as VS2003 has memory leaks

On the workstations I use XP or 2000

However XP or w2000 will work ok as the main operating system just depends on how much you want to pay for the OS - more importantly up your hard disk and memory as much as you can afford.

I think this is where some confusion will occur with people new to this and are just getting started.
For instance can all of the sofware below run indepently on the same OS instance?  And all of the versions below be used to work with the 2 versions of DNN?

  • Visual Studio ver. 2003 and 2005
  • SQL 2000, MSDE, and SQL Express 2005

I would think we would want to specify which groups work with which versions and will they work on one OS instance or are multiple Virtual instances needed for 1 piece of hardware.
Thanks, lets keep the ideas coming.
