Hi Scott,

I've been meaning to check out EntitySpaces for the last 6 months or so but haven't had time.
What is the functional connection between MyGeneration and EntitiySpaces? (besides the author)?

I currently use CodeSmith (the free 2.6 version), but if I can find anything to make module development easier and quicker it would be worth it.

MyGeneration executes templates against databases to generate code. MyGeneration works with an unlimited number of architectures including but not limited to EntitySpaces, dOOdads, NHibernate, etc. MyGeneration is absolutely free.

EntitySpaces consists of templates that are executed within MyGeneration to produce our business objects code that communicates with our assemblies to provide said functionality. So in summation MyGeneration executes templates against datasource metadata to produce code in many different formats. EntitySpaces is one such architecture. Just let me know if you have any more questions.

Thansk for the info folks so far.  I had a quick look at EntitySpaces but it seems just to be more steps and complexity.  All I want/need is a simple tool to point at a table and have it generate the DNN DAL items.  It seems most of the tools out there all try and do way too much and it becomes more effort than it is worth.

Are there any new templates for CodeSmith that handle DNN4?  Everythign seems to be rather out of date from what I can find.

s2k,

I'm not sure this will help at all.. but...  You could use the tool from BonoSoft to completely generate your DNN Module Install Scripts (including stored procedures, views, constraints, etc), Uninstall Scripts, Data Access Layer, Business Layer and an initial front end to your module.  The front end doesn't have much there then a simple "Hello World" but I prefer that since it's your front end that needs a hand's On coding.  Most of the time anyway.

So you could use BonoSoft's tool to get you a great start.  Then use Visual Studio 2005 to upgrade the code.  If your database objects are already developed... then it should only take you a few minutes to get this done.  It's simple so there isn't much of a learning curve at all...it's straight forward.

However... you are stuck with the design of the tools DAL and BL.  It's the more common approach taken with DNN modules, just not something I prefer.  If you are looking for something with a more robust DAL and Business Object Design Pattern then you may want to take a closer look at My Generation or other tools.  Or... just code it from scratch.  Which is definitly the way to go if you are building a massive complex system anyway.  But if you need something simple... BonoSoft's tool will get you there really fast.

Scott,

MyGeneration is $200? Are you adding any support for .Net 3.0?
