I m working for a project whose requirement is to add users in bulk in DNN, i want to ask how to register users in dotnetnuke programmatically.

You'll want to take a look at DotNetNuke.Entities.Users.UserController and DotNetNuke.Entities.Users.UserInfo.

The UserController class has 2 AddUser methods, I believe you'll want to use the 2nd one that takes a UserInfo object and a boolean (to add user to membership provider).

I haven't tried it yet, but I believe you can create a UserInfo object, populate it, then pass it into the UserController class' AddUser function.

Sorry I don't have more for you, but this should get you into the right area.

I'm not sure of your requirements, whether it is dynamically on demand or if it can be performed manually in batches.  There are modules like "BulkReg" on SnowCovered that can do bulk registrations fairly well in an offline batch type mode (I have used it).  In the case of BulkReg it cannot populate custom profile properties (I don't know of any module that can do that unfortunately). 

Once your core user data is in, custom properties can be fairly easily populated with simple SQL statements.  I had my user data in Excel, so I used Access link table type stuff to get my custom profile data in via SQL.
