My site was shut down by WH4L for consuming 100% CPU. Please review and offer suggestions before they shut it back down.

I upgraded to DNN 3.3.5 and needed to upgrade to Active Forums 3.6.7. I downloaded the latest version AF 3.6.7 from their website and did an install. It seemed to install but at the very bottom I got this error.

ExceptionSystem.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "c:\hosting\webhost4life\member\homeschool2\web.config" is denied. at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String str) at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize, Boolean useAsync, String msgPath, Boolean bFromProxy) at System.IO.FileStream..ctor(String path, FileMode mode, FileAccess access, FileShare share, Int32 bufferSize) at System.IO.File.OpenFile(String path, FileAccess access, IntPtr& handle) at System.IO.File.SetLastWriteTimeUtc(String path, DateTime lastWriteTimeUtc) at System.IO.File.SetLastWriteTime(String path, DateTime lastWriteTime) at DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.Config.Touch() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.ResourceInstaller.PaDnnInstaller_V3.UpgradeModule(DesktopModuleInfo ModuleInfo) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.ResourceInstaller.PaDnnInstallerBase.RegisterModules(PaFolder Folder, ArrayList Modules, ArrayList Controls) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.ResourceInstaller.PaDnnInstallerBase.Install(PaFolderCollection folders) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.ResourceInstaller.PaInstaller.Install()

AF Support says that this is a DNN issue trying to access the web.config file. I had AF installed before, is this something new. I just upgraded my DNN from 3.2.2 to 3.3.5 onWH4L. Would I need to reset any permissions.

Right after the install error, WH4L shut down my database and sent me these pics.

The ramp up in the middle was when they started my db back up. http://homeschoolportals.com/sc1.jpg

Then they shut it down and it ramped down. http://homeschoolportals.com/sc2.jpg

I tried clearing cache to see if that would help. They said it was getting better but still high. They are leaving it running while I investigate. Please let me know what I can do to check this out and determine the issues before they shut my sites back down again.

Thanks.

The error is because DNN trys to change the last updated time on the web.config file when a new module is installed.  It is a redundant process to make sure the application restarts so it shouldn't be a problem, and it wouldn't cause the CPU to go to 100%.

It's fairly typical for a site that has any load on it to use a lot of CPU when it first starts.  I'll bet that as your cache gets loaded the CPU will settle back down on it's own.

Is this new with 3.3.5? If not, why would my site permissions change with an upgrade? What user needs access to the file to keep this from happening?

I have another WH4L account that I upgraded and I want to make the correct permission settings on it before I do the AF upgrade.

The web.config would need change attributes permissions for the anonymous web user, but that will only remove the error you posted, not the CPU usage.
