I know this is an old thread, but I was trying to come up with an argument for a client today as to why they do not want joomla. Joomla insists you start with content and then find a way to house it, while DNN starts with a container and you fill it in with content. Plus DNN alows drag and drop of content, not some lame includes set up. Your ability to position content is far simpler in DNN. If you like the power of raw code, but are not really concerned about content, you can do a lot with Joomla, but if you are building it so other people can use it, DNN is pretty much the best thing out there. PHP apps are always overengineered and have little by way of front end capabilites for contributors.

Probably the most important aspect of this project will be the need for a customized search tool for searching for vacation rentals based on specific criteria/parameters, rather than a free text search.

Then you're not comparing DNN to Joomla, you need to compare rental solutions.  Might look at Ventrian's Property Agent in DNN, or browse SnowCovered for a complete vacation rental app.  Sorry, never looked at any of this for Joomla, so you'll have to do some digging in that arena.

Hi Martin,

I worked with both. I agree with the guy above. Depends on your skills.

We build an complex SaaS business solution in DNN and third party modules like Indoogrid, DotNetCharting. Works great, stable and sizable. With Indoogrid one have a great tool to access, present, manage your tables.
And it's very user friendly for the registered users in your website.

Also : DNN has more commercial modules providers and Joomla perhaps more free modules (or components if you like). I like to pay for my modules so I can get any support. Joomla has a bigger and more active user community.

Well good luck with choosing.

Regards,

Martijn

Basically, Joomla has more free modules than DNN. You can get more stuff to add into your site, for free.

Dnn, on the other hand, has more of an administration system. You can do more with the back-end than you can with Joomla.

I find Joomla to be confusing, where as DNN is as simple as dropping modules where you want them.

I'm kind of disappointed that there aren't as many free modules with DNN; I think that's all that's holding it back from taking over Joomla's spot in CMS. More free modules would mean more people migrating to DNN.

Christopher, I don't feel Joomla has that many more free extensions I just think they do a better job of centralizing a list of available free extensions (over @ extensions.joomla.org). Right now, if you went over to CodePlex directly and did some searching, I bet you would find a bunch of free extensions for DotNetNuke (~200-300). One of my current tasks is to overhaul our Forge (our extension spot) which should hopefully shed some light on the free extensions we do have and expose them on a centralized location (this site).
