I'm evaluating 'cms' systems for an upcoming redesign of our website at work and considering DNN and Joomla.  Despite the language differences, DNN being a portal system and Joomla a cms, can anyong provide bias/un-biased comments on why I should choose one system over the other?

I could go either way. Both offer a good variety of modules, but I haven't made up my mind as to which provides a more flexible design offering.

Probably the most important aspect of this project will be the need for a customized search tool for searching for vacation rentals based on specific criteria/parameters, rather than a free text search.

Thanks,

Christian

To me it really all boils down to what platform you are comfortable with.
DNN with MS SQL/ SQL Express and ASP.net framework, or Joomla on MySQL using PHP.
You can put PHP/MySQL on a Windows box, but I haven't yet heard of anyone getting DNN running on Linux using Mono.

As far as maturity, Joomla(Mambo) has been around longer, and is probably a little more end user friendly, but if you are going to support one or the other, then what I said above seems to be the most important issue.

The core DNN Search has not matured yet, so I wouldn't recommend picking DNN for it's core search, but you may find a third party module with good search capabilities in your specific case.

I recently was in the final 2 vendors bidding on a site for a professional organization.  The clients are somewhat computer literate, but not expert users and have no knowledge of HTML.  My competitor was pitching a Joomla based solution.

In the end the client did end up choosing me.  They said it wasn't based on just the technology, although they did prefer DNN to Joomla.   When I asked them why specifically they preferred DNN over Joomla they said they found Joomla harder to use.  Not as intuitive.

So in choosing one over the other, maybe it would be a good idea to arrange for a test drive of each CMS for your key client stakeholders.  In the end both are pretty flexible and able to be customized depending on your skill sets.  In the end you have to be able to support it.  Do you know both PHP and VB.Net equally well?

FWIW - in August when this was happening I checked out the Joomla site....splattered all across its front page were announcements regarding critical bug fixes.  Not exactly confidence inspiring.  While Mambo has been around for a while I was under the impression that Joomla was not older than DNN.  It's version is 1.0.11.

Joomla is a good platform, no mistake. I have used it for a couple of projects.

The main reason for choosing it over DNN would be the licensing costs of Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP (ie free) v's A Windows Server OS and SQL Server  (a lot if you need to get a SQL Server enterprise license) if the application is to be hosted in house or hosting costs if on a web hosting environment.

Joomla splits out admin much more from the client side application and it is a lot less intuitive than DNN. I would always use DNN given the choice, the development environment for module creation is so much better, and the skinning seems more flexible.

I can't answer your specific search question, unfortunately. Sounds like you'd need a custom module for either platform.

Take a look at this:

Here you can compare a CMS with another...
