I don't think DNN is a piece of Crap. As a matter of fact, I'm quite impressed with it.  I'm trying to install the 4.3.7 on my notebook to bring out to a client, I am having the same problem and would appreciate some help.

I just downloaded & installed:

  1. Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition - Installed No Problem
  2. .NET 2.0 Framework/SDK - Installed No Problem
  3. DotNetNuke_4.3.7_StarterKit.zip - Could not install
    1. Web Application Framework - Installed OK
    2. Compiled module (VB) - FAILED (reason below)
    3. Dynamic Module (VB) - Installed OK
    4. Dynamic Module (C#)  - Installed OK
    5. Skin - Installed OK

The reason listed for the failure of the Compiled Module is:

Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist.  The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio.

Machine Specifics are

  • Operating System: WIN XP pro SP2
  • Processor: 2.8 ghz
  • Memory: 1.25 gig
  • Plenty of Drive space

From the specs, I didn't see the need sor SQL 2005. Is this required?

Thanks

Since I couldn't get it working with VWD, I installed VS2005 and that got me passed the INSTALLATION error noted in my previous post.

I continued to follow the instructions to build the site, and after pressing CTRL-F5 to build and it completeing OK, I received a WEB page with a 403 error (and note Most likely cause: This website required you to log in).

I also tried to look at the database, and it seems empty.

Any ideas?

I hit the same error and was able to get around it by installing VB.NET 2005 Express (downloadable from Microsoft).
