Hello everyone.  I am fairly new to DNN especially when installing on a XP Pro platform instead of Win Server. But this is what the client wants as they wont spend any money on an actually server.  The DNN Portal will be used as an Intranet for project management and what not.  I need some help getting it up and running for the entire office to see/use.  Since there is now Win Server I have to use SQL server express and iis 5.1 Correct?  Set up my database in sql express server, and change my release.config.  The database name is Database just to keep it simple so I shouldnt have to change anything in the web.config file. Right?

First I use Visual Studio and the startup Kit.  I get it running fine but no one else can see it and when I thought it was up and running closed everything and came back later I get a Page can not be found in the browser.  Visual studio is not running.  I start up Visual Studio and rebuild the portal and it automaticly opens the web browser with the DNN site.  So it works again.  But why do I have to build it with visual studio everytime.  Still no one can see it.  They are trying to access it by using the server IP.  192........./default.aspx   They get a page can not be found.  Im not sure what Im doing wrong.  Can someone please help me.

Thanks
Dusty

Dusty,

I feel we might be having the same/similiar problem??? I'm not sure but I'm very new to DNN. I have VS2005 and DNN on my local PC (Windows XP Pro) and I build and publish that and it works for me no problem. I push it to my Windows 2003 server (for company intranet) and no one else can see anything then. They get a page cannot be displayed as well. Is there maybe something you have to as far as DNN to setup for fisrt time use maybe?

thanks, jonathan

I have the same software specs as the both of you, and i to am having the same problem. I made the virtual directory in IIS, and followed the insall directions in the dnn doc's word for word. It runs fine through VWD but when I upload to iis, it will not run. I get an error "Cannot connect to database using connection string".

Is the URL you used to install the portal the same as the URL users are trying to access it by?  For example, if you installed using http://localhost/... you will need to log in and add a portal alias for the address remote users will have to use.

Something else to think about - some companies disable port 80 across subnets.  Are any other web sites you create on this machine accessible?

In both your cases I would simply install on the target servers directly using the install package.  No need to use Visual Studio at all.  Remember that on Server 2003 it is the NETWORK SERVICE account not ASPNET that needs to be configured.

So Shawn... are you telling me I can set up my virtual directory in IIS and download the install pack from DNN website and install it directly to that virtual directory and it will work? I thought that was just a template and you need VS to build it for you first???? I'm confused.

Jonathan
