Hi, I just installed DNN 4.4 on my computer. I used the instructions by KathrynRF (see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/21459/threadpage/1/scope/posts/Default.aspx) and found that several steps listed in that (very helpful) post are not necessary. I thought, maybe someone will find these updated, stripped-down instructions helpful:

DNN 4.4.0 (using the install package)
Win XP Pro SP2 (NTFS file system, not FAT or FAT32)
IIS v5.1
SQL Express v9.00.2047.00
ASP.NET v2.0.50727

  1. Create a directory and unzip the DotNetNuke install package there. (Mine was C:\DotNetNuke\Website)
  2. Create IIS Virtual Directory:
    1. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services
    2. Open Up the tree: Internet Information Services -> MyComputer (local computer) -> Web Sites
    3. Right-click on the MyComputer (default web site) and select New -> Virtual Directory
    4. Click "Next"
    5. Enter "DotNetNuke" for the Alias and click "Next"
    6. Browse to C:\DotNetNuke\Website and click "Next"
    7. Check all the following boxes: Read, Run scripts, Execute, Write.
    8. Click "Next"
    9. Click Finish
  3. Finish configuring DotNetNuke Virtual Directory (right click on the Directory in IIS, "Properties")
    1. Virtual Directory Tab
      1. Read, Write, Log Visits, Index this Resource.
      2. Execute Permissions: Scripts and Executables
      3. Application Protection: Medium (Pooled)
    2. Directory Security Tab. Left this one alone
    3. ASP.NET Tab: Confirm V2.0.5027 is enabled
    4. Click "Apply" and "OK"
  4. Set up File Access
    1. Open Windows Explorer to C:\DotNetNuke\Website and select Tools -> Folder Options
    2. Navigate to the “View” tab and clear the checkbox next to “Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)”
    3. Click “Apply to All Folders”
    4. Click “OK”
    5. Right click on the “Website” folder and select “Properties”
    6. On the “Security” tab, click “Add”
    7. Enter “ASPNET”
    8. Click “OK”
    9. Check all boxes except “Full Access”
    10. Click “Apply”
    11. Click “OK”
  5. In the web browser, navigate to http://localhost/dotnetnuke.
    1.  The database will automatically be created/initialized (this may take some moments)
    2. Once the installation has completed click the link at the bottom of the page to access your portal

I hope I didn't make any mistakes while writing this down. Hopefully this will be useful to someone (hope so).

Best regards,
Martin

Hey Martin,
Thanks for posting that information.  I have a very detailed walkthrough for setting up DNN with Express that I'll post over at PowerDNN.com later this evening.  The one disadvantage of setting it up the way that you mentioned is that it makes moving from Express to SQL Standard quite a bit more challenging.

Great job on posting that though, I know that it will definately be useful for a lot of people out there.

Hi Tony, thanks for your reply.

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Isn't upgrading to SQL Standard simply a matter of attaching the existing database files (from SQL express) in SQL Server 2005 Standard and then changing the connection strings in DNN's web.config file?

Best regards,
Martin
