We recently had a site moved to a new hosting company. The site appeared to have moved correctly and all aspects of the front and backend worked. In the last couple days, the member of our staff who is the only one working on the site reported the following error when we login to the backend of the site

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Nothing else happens - don't end up seeing any of the backend menus or anything. Anyone know what this may be? Think it's DNN 3.x

In order to find out what the real error is, logon as host and go to Admin >  LogViewer, and look for errors reported there. You can paste the contents of the error here so we may be able to help you

I was getting this error (possibly not the same cause, but it's worth a shot).  I set up a brand new 4.40 site, with 3 portals.  As soon as I changed the skin on a portal, the portal started showing this error.  Note that the only skins available (since this was a pristine install) were the default DNN - Blue and DNN - Grey.  The other portals were unaffected (but when I tried changing the skin on a second one, it did the same thing).

I tried reverting the settings logged in as host; I tried SQL profiling to see if I could determine which settings were wrong, etc.  Since it was a brand-new install, I decided to scrap it -- I dropped and recreated the database, and re-ran the install.  The new site appears to be okay...so far.

Sorry, I don't have the logs from the aborted site, but they were definitely showing the null object reference exception.
