Michael first, thank for your help.

I am getting the 403 when I enter this text in the browser and hit return: "http://localhost/DotNetNuke437"

This occurs after I have downloaded both VWD and SQL express and the DNN 4.3.7 Install version.

I unzip to c:\Intepub\DotNetNuke437

I set up the Virtual Directory, name it DonNetNuke437, give it it's permissions and set ASP.NET to 2. 0...

The next step is go to your site in your browser. Thats when I get the 403.

try '"http://localhost/DotNetNuke437/default.aspx" instead.

Good idea, thanks, but when I do that, I get:

Server error in /DotNetNuke427 application.

Failed to access IIS metabase.

You are getting the 403("forbidden" error) becuase you have not registered the site bypass a directory listing request. To do this:

open up inetmgr(you do this by going to start->run->type in 'inetmgr' and hit enter
Then click on the error beside the computer name you are in. when it opens click on 'default website'. When that open right-click on the virtual directory you created and which your dnn folder maps to and choose properties. In the ensuing dialogue choose documents. Then add 'default.aspx' to the list you see there then apply and ok it.

If the above is heavy going for you, you could consider always referencing your site as http://localhost/DotNetNuke437/default.aspx i.e giving it the full reference. Then IIS is sure to know what you are talking about.

The earlier problems you mentioned about were probably permission problems. If your server is set up for testing purposes only and dont have connections to the internet, a surefire way to overcome them in my experience is to give access to your dnn folder i.e the physical and not the logical or virtual folder to the computer user 'everyone'. It should get it working then. However if there are security issues then make sure the user who is accessing your db is the same user you are going to your browser as. i.e the account you are logged into your current computer session as.

Then let's see what gives

You've proven that you have not installed aspnet correctly.  Probably installed IIS after installing aspnet.
