These settings when setting up the virtual directory should work:

AFAIK the Execute permission is not needed for DNN

I agree but when these settings are not used many people have problems installing.

run "aspnet_regiis -i"

There are several programs by this name on my laptop. None of them are in the default paths. I ran the one in this directory:  C:\WINDOWSP\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\

It said it "installed ASP.NET v2.0.50727

This doesn't get installed some other way? By some install script by an app?

In any case, I tried to get to my site again and now get something a little different:

Configuration error ... could not find part of a path ...

Arrrggghhhh.

As it turned out, I have had similar problems installing. I found a simple solution that worked for me just a few minutes ago.

When using the console method for registering the ASP.NET 2.0 service, the component is displayed in the IIS manager but is actually not working correctly. By reading other forums on the internet I have understood that this can sometimes happen when the .NET 2.0 framework is installed AFTER the IIS 6.0 software is installed.

The solution is to use the "Repair" functionality of the .NET 2.0 framework, even though there seems no apparent reason to do so.

Navigate to your Control Panel.
Open "Add or Remove programs"
Locate your "Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework" installation in the list
Click the "Change/Remove" button
Choose the "Repair" option
Click "Next"

The repair will now start. It can take a while, so be patient. Remember to reboot the computer, and allow it to execute further repair tasks after the reboot.

This procedure has solved the problem for me.

(I have other problems, but they belong in other threafs :-) )

Best of luck

apart from the fact that asp.net needs to be installed correctly, it also needs certain permissions to run w/o problems. See this article on msdn library about this: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kwzs111e.aspx
