upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1.2

downloaded 5.1.2 upgrade module. unzip to overwrite portal files/folder. then tried to reload my site but gives me this error. help

try restart the application, either in IIS or by a minor edit and saving of web.config file.

If this doesn't help, edit web.config and remove references to Active Directory and Cardspace authentication, if present.

I have the exact same issue.  I did the above tasks to no avail.

     I had the same error. Moving any references to Active Directory in the web.config worked for me.

I get the same thing, how does one remove the AD reference? I have it inside the "authentication defaultprovider" node and just one "providers" sub-node. Do I just remove the whole higher node or which one?
