I'm confused about the upgrade download.  What exactly is it?  It has 11,000 files in it and .vb files so it seems like a source distribution of DNN.  I see no mention of it on what it is?

Core Framework

To track fixes and upgrades from one release version to another, please visit the Change Log located at support.dotnetnuke.com.

DotNetNuke is distributed in a number of different packages:

  • Source Package  -  Contains everything, including full application source code
  • Starter Kit Package  -  Contains only the files needed to configure a development environment in Visual Web Developer Express or Visual Studio 2005
  • Install Package  -  Contains only the files needed for deployment to a webserver
  • Documentation Package - Contains only developer documentation

If you are new to DotNetNuke we encourage you to download a package which includes the documentation and read the installation documentation first.

Use the Install Package only if you are already an experienced user, have read the documentation and just want to upload the minimal required files to a live (remote) webserver.

Use the Source Package if you are a web developer who wish to extend or customize the DotNetNuke application framework.

The upgrade package is the same as the installation package with 2 exceptions:

    • it does not contain a web.config, so your current does not get overwritten. Copy over both connectionstrings, both encryption keys, codeDirectories, objectQualifier and database owner from web.config to release.config, rename your current web.config to .bak and relaease.config to web.config.
    • the upgrade package does not contain any module packages.

The upgrade package is designed for users, who want to keept the current version of all modules, otherwise I suggest to use install package - but don't forget to save web.config prior to unzipping the files.
