I cannot figure out why I am getting the following error:

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 04.04.00

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I am trynig to install DNN to a remote server via VS2005 and I have left all defaults in place. So, I am not sure why I am getting this error. Therefore, could someone help me figure out why I am getting this error. Thanks in advance..

I just had the same problem.  I found this page to be very helpful:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/825/EntryID/1202/Default.aspx

Mine started working after I followed these steps:

1. create a blank database in SQLExpress management studio.

2. also in the SQL management studio, create a Login for the ASPNET account

3. double-click on the new ASPNET login, and open up the "User Mapping" section.  Select the dotnetnuke database you created in step one, and select  "dbo" as the database role membership.

4. use the following connection string for both web.config entries:

Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=False;Database=YourDatabaseName;

also make sure that the ASPNET acount has read/write/mod permissions on your DotNetNuke folder.

Hope this helps.

If you are using a remote server it is typically not allowable to use the \SQLExpress server name for connection.

You might need to get the specific server name and passwords for the server from your hosting provider if you do not have them already.

If this is your own remote computer, the links above should help you out.
