Hi, what is the best upgrade path from 4.3.4 to 4.4.1, and is 4.4.1 any faster? I use WebHost4Life and it seems really slow.

Yes, 441 is faster, but the shared accounts on WH4L are so bogged down that the chance you'll experience the difference is minimal.

When every page is taking 2-3 minutes to load, the fact that it might be compressed from 60kb to 15kb really has no effect.

Speaking with 3 years WH4L experience, there is no way to run a working DNN site on a shared account there with any sense of performance. And whilst I loathe giving them my business or recommendations, I have to admit the VPS account I have there now is very fast.

Switch to websecurestores.com.  I have run dozens of sites there for almost 2 years now and the performance is amazing, even for a $10 account.  Their support is also very fast and good.  One of my sites has over 5000 members and gets 63000 pages views per month (and it runs on a $5/month reseller account!).  Performance is never a problem.

I have just purchased a VPS account and the performance is no better than websecurestores.com's shared accounts.  I just need the extra flexibility of a VPS now.

Thanks to you both - what is a VPS account?

It's Virtual Private Server.  It's like a dedicated server, but cheaper because one real server is split into many virtual ones.
