am trying to install DotNetNuke, but I need some guidance.  When I tried to load http://localhost/dnn/install/install.aspx?mode=install in my browser to install DNN, I get the error below:

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource 'http://localhost/dnn/install/install.aspx?mode=in...

<%@ Page language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Explicit="True" Inherits="DotNetNuke.Framework.Install" CodeFile="Install....

These are my steps before trying to launch install.aspx... I extracted the DNN source package zip in it's own directory. I created a  virtual directory on my local IIS pointing to the "website" subdirectory of my dnn directory. I created a new database and a database user on a remote system.  I edited my web.config file to include a connection string to my database in two places.

I'm sure I've missed something. Any help is appreciated.

Eric

please ensure that your web.config and Install\Portal\Portals.resources both exist, and are both valid xml. Try renaming the files with .xml extension and opening them in IE, it will help indicate any invalid nodes.

It looks to me like you do not have ASP.Net installed.  Your server is delivering the source to the browser without running it through the ASP.Net framework.

In the Install\Portal\ directory I do not have Portals.resources.  I have "Placeholder.txt".

I ran a check on the xml and it is not valid.  I don't know how to fix it.  This is the release.config file from the current dotnetnuke source download.  All I did was rename it to web.config and update the connection strings with my information.  Is there a lot more customization of web.config reguired?

Thanks,

I guess that's right, because I do get errors about not having .vbproj type installed. However, I did install the .NET 2.0 framework on my machine. I'm not confident that I did it correctly.  There were no errors during that install.
