As a side note it just seems to be a problem with DNN and IE. I am having the same problem, the only way I have found to get around this is to use FireFox, or another browser. I noticed it was always happening when I was editing on my windows box, if I was doing editing in Linux I would never get logged out that is when I thought it was an IE issue. I installed FireFox on windows and that took care of it.

I'm having the same problem...were you able to fix it?  I'm using activeforums 3.5 and I notice I can duplicate the problem. If I click on the group topics and then click on back to the forum root (do this 6 to seven times) then it will log me out.  It has to be a different group topic though when you choose a group topic.

This is a cookie related issue.  I recently had to troubleshoot something similar for a customer.  The min/max settings for a module get stored in a cookie.  If any other module is using a cookie to store information it will eventually reach the maximum cookie size.  When this happens the forms authentication cookie is deleted thus forcing the logout.  I have also seen this happen with a few other modules.  We have already taken steps to help eleviate this problem in the 3.6 release of ActiveForums.

Hi Will,

I am running 4.0.2 on a 2003 server and using IE 6 and hav the same issue.  What is the fix for this cookie issue?  Is it a IE setting or is there one?  Or does this have to be fixed in DNN's code, if so when will the new release be out?  I desparetly need to stop this behavior immediately or my customer will be very unhappy.

Thanks,

Aaron

The following link provides the background about this cookie size issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306070

SUMMARY
Microsoft Internet Explorer complies with the following RFC 2109 recommended minimum limitations:
at least 300 cookies
at least 4096 bytes per cookie (as measured by the size of the characters that comprise the cookie non-terminal in the syntax description of the Set-Cookie header)
at least 20 cookies per unique host or domain name

Although Active Forums has been identified as one module that may cause this issue, it seems that the issue is related to DNN in general. As stated previously, this was not an issue for DNN 3.1.x and occurs even if no additional modules are installed. Something has changed with 3.2.x and 4.0.x that appears to be causing the cookie size or number to grow rapidly.

If you run HTTPAnalyzer you will see that every module that has the MinMax feature will set a cookie.  Navigate a site with HTTPAnalyzer running and you can watch the cookie grow and eventually overload.

A quick fix we did for one client was to remove the MinMax feature from their containers.  The problem has happened again since.
