Hello,

I am having a great deal of trouble with the performance of, this our first, DNN site at present.
during the last week or so we have noticed a significant  increase in how long it takes for pages
to come up when selecting them or selecting modules for editing.

Sometimes when we chose to edit a simple text/html module we'll receive the following error;

"A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Other times, just about always now, pages don't load and the whole website just sits supended
waiting for who knows what. At present, most times, the only way in to continue development is
logging in as Host. Even as Admin users we often cannot do anything.

I have tried computer system cleanups, defrag, scans, etc. Nothing has helped. Other applications
seem imune (I could be wrong on this) to the performance problems, but I believe something is
very wrong with our, nearly complete, DNN site. The site is not live yet as we were working on
finishing it for the very purpose of uploading it to a provider.

If anybody can help us diagnose the trouble and how to fix it, we would be greatly appreciative.
Perhaps there are ASP NET and IIS things we can check/do? I do not know whether this problem
is database related, or otherwise.

  • Which DNN version do you use? upgrade to DNN 4.5.1 recommended
  • how many modules do you have installed? remove all modules, you don't need
  • how much RAM has your IIS available?
  • how are you caching and compression settings?

Yes we really need to know how much RAM you have and if you're using SQL Server 2005 or not. On my laptop with only 1 Gig and SQL Server 2005 Express, DotNetNuke will keep throwing Object Reference Not Found periodically. So I only use SQL server 2000 on my laptop.

Hi Folks,

I am running DNN 4.4.1, 26 modules installed (many never used), my laptop has 1GB ram, Windows XP Pro,
SQL Server 2005 Express, Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition, default caching and
compression settings
.

If upgraded the memory to 2GB, removed any unecessary modules, would that help? Also, what caching and
compression settings would you recommend?

I think it may have something to do with slow laptop hard drives and SQL Server 2005 Express. For me at least, I simply cannot run it with my DotNetNuke sites. The extra memory can't hurt (except your wallet )
