I would like to upgrade from the v3.3.7 tree to the v4.5 tree of the framework. What is the best way of going about doing this upgrade? I just did a preliminary try at it, treating it as an in-place upgrade, like i have done before between v2 to v3, for instance. However, i got way too many errors to list here, resulting in very broken installation.

I have seen a few reports from other people, saying basically, "the in-place upgrade did not work." Instead, they created a new v4.5 installation and then manually copied content from the old to the new install. This is obviously going to be a tedious task, with a decent amount of content over several years.

Can anyone give me some recommendations or guidance on what is recommended? Is there an official recommendation, maybe, from the Core group? What did the core group do on the www.dotnetnuke.com site?

Thanks for any info!

Jae

You can do the upgrade over your current installation however you must first remove the .vb files from all directories within your site, you will also need to update IIS to run under the .NET 2.0 framework.

You will want to fully test this beforehand, but the process is not that complicated.  There are instructions provided in the documentation for installation of DotNetNuke that explain the upgrade process in a fair amount of detail.

From  my experience, i have never removed *.vb files while upgrading (using source package for fresh installs and upgrade package for upgrades)

This is only needed for upgrades from a 3.x to a 4.x version due to the switch of .NET frameworks.
