btw, the error you get is not about aspnet, but about dnn not being able to get the portal settings. That has to do with the portal alias (dnn maps the portal alias to the actual portal).

I don't know if this is your real problem but when you've no ASPNET user, DNN (and other .NET web application) will not work.

You can create the user with the following command:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe -i  (XP Version)

Ensure that in the portalalias table you have an entry for the EXACT URL that your are using to access the website from outisde the server.  Far example if your virutal directory is DotNetNuke and your servers ip address is 192.168.1.105 then make sure the following is in as an alias

192.168.1.105/DotNetNuke
