I have been using DNN since 2 and up until now it's been fairly predictable (albeit a bit cumbersome) to install, but now I cannot get past the very fist step of installation.  It has to do with directory and file permissions, of which they are correct, but no matter what I do I cannot get past this.  The error I am getting is:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

The process cannot access the file 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\web.config' because it is being used by another process.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

  • If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
    1. the [SERVER]\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.
  • If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

How do I get past this?  I have done exactly as I did the last roll out of this and there is little to no information (documentation) to help support this.  Help!

The installation is failing because your web.config file has a lock from another process. Do you have console access to the server? If so, try resetting the site in IIS or use IISReset from the command prompt to reset IIS altogether. Once you have verified that web.config is not locked by touching it (i.e making a small, irrelevant change such as adding a space and saving the file), you can re-try the installation.
