I'm wondering what are the best/most common site dev setups.  I.E. how you develop your site and then apply those changes to the live site?

EDIT:  The phrase "how you develop your site" is a little vague.  For example, I had the notion at one time of developing locally and then uploading the database and files to the webhost, but 1. I couldn't figure out how to transfer the database.  2. It seemed I would be overwriting any changes in the site's state such as users who had registered at the site.

I have a sample development setup tutorial on my site (dnnJungle) which is what I'm using (together with vs.net templates and codesmith).
That's just for developing new modules. When you have to transfer a module you should create and install package and install on the real server using dnn standard features.

How bout as far as non-programming development.  Such as rearranging modules on a page, adding/removing modules.  That is normally all done on the live site?

Everyone has it's one procedures for doing such work but it all depends on your infrastructure: development, testing, staging, live.

You can try it on your dev machine and directly publish on the live server. You can try in to live server or a hidden page. You can try it on stage then repeat on live, ....

I think that's just a matter of building a process and following it.
