Hi

I have a few installations of DNN 4.4.0 that I want to upgrade to 4.5. I have searched the documentation and the forums but can't seem to find any step by step info on the upgrade process.

I am using install version of 4.4.0, and have downloaded the upgrade version of 4.5

Can anyone tell me what the basic procedue is ? Or failing that, perhas point me in the right direction to a forum post that deals with this ?

Thanks :)

you've downloaded the correct package. This is the basic procedure:

  • unzip or copy or ftp all files in the distribution to the root of your dnn application
  • rename web.config to something like web.config.[date].resources (you can use any other name, but the date will make it easy to keep track of older webconfigs, the .resources extension makes sure the file cannot be downloaded)
  • rename release.config to web.config
  • change the following things (copy from old web.config file):
    • 2 sql connection strings
    • machinekey (under system.web)
    • optionally objectQualifier and/or DBO (under  <data defaultProvider="SqlDataProvider"> )
    • make any other custom changes you had in your old web.config
    • save the new web.config
  • browse to your site, upgrade will start automatically

if you want to prevent visits to your site while you are upgrading, you can do the following:

  • before copying the upgrade files to your site, put a file called "App_Offline.htm" in the root of your dnn installation, this will take the application offline (see here for more info: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2005/10/06/426755.aspx )
  • Change the AutoUpgrade value to False (under appsettings in web.config). This will prevent the dnn autoupgrade feature.
  • You can manually start the upgrade by browsing to this url: http://[yourdomain]/install/install.aspx?mode=install

cheers.. and good luck :)

Hi Eric

Thanks for the help - this is exactly the type of instruction I was looking for - I will try a test upgrade on one of my test sites first. The installation / upgrade manual is a little unclear as to the process.

Much appreciated :)

Nice summary Eric. I was familiar with the basics, but not with all these details.

Where is this documented?! It seems there should be a link to this from the download page. It sure seems like it gets repeated EVERY(!) time a new version of DNN comes out and is responsible for innumerable hours of frustration by us non-professional users.

I'm sure it is documented well - albeiti perhaps not with this level of detail - but I couldn't find it without wading into manual downloads.  It isn't under online help that I can tell. It is under the FAQs: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/About/Documentation/FrequentlyAskedQuestions/tabid/546/Default.aspx where the last entry states:

Q5. Is it easy to upgrade to a newer version of DNN?

Answer: Yes.  First, backup your database before upgrading to a new version.  Unzip the newer version over the old, and the application will automatically execute the necessary database scripts.

In my mind, this doesn't do the topic justice - especially given the concise but detailed advice above!

Hint to core team, could you consider adding a link to this post from the download page?! Thanks in advance from a bunch of people...and me!
