I found what the problem was.  I had the Authentication for SQL Server set to "Windows only" instead of "SQL Server and Windows".  Everything is working now.

I hate to tag onto this, but I am having the same problem and have checked everything mentioned in the posts.  Any other thoughts.?

You saw my last post where I found that it was a security setting in SQL Server (Windows & SQL Server)?  That was the thing that had me going crazy since several times I verified that I had the right server, database, user and password in the connection string.  Also, I tried several variations on the connection string as well, none worked until I made the propoer security setting.  If you have that, did you try doing something like using a trusted connection just to see if that will get things connected for you?  I don't know what else it would be.

I also have this problem, Am running sql server 2000 sp3 on sbs 2003 premium. I have tried everything you wrote here, but am still getting the same error. Hmm, giving it up soon
