Hi,
I am very new to DNN and was hope for some installation advice. I have a collocated server with one NIC that is multihomed, with a block of 16 IP's. As of right now I have 3 sites being pointed to static IPs and a handful of sites being directed via host headers. My question is, can I install DNN under a new website instead of virtual directory so people can access it direct from domain name? I already tried it once and I keep getting 400 Bad Request (Page cannot be displayed) errors. Any advice for the rookie would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Absolutely.  Are you trying to install from scratch or move an existing site?  From scratch, all you need is a site that is addressable and the wizard will handle the rest.

Thanks for the reply. Ok here is what happened, I was finally able to install dnn under a virtual directory under x.x.x.18/dnn. Then I found out there was some weird conflict with our mail server so I had to move it to x.x.x.21/dnn. Since the move it no longer works, I’m getting a 400 – bad request error. Preferably I would like to have it under x.x.x.21 instead of the virtual directory. Anyhow I have checked a few of the basic things in IIS such as making sure the network service has modify permissions (I ever added the aspnet account.); The website has anonymous access allowed. Default.aspx is in the IIS documents list. IUSR_xxx is allowed read access…I’m outta ideas so if you have any please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

If it has been moved (the url) AFTER you installed the DNN instance, you're going to need a portal alias that matches the new address.  Since you can't get to it via HTTP, that makes it a little difficult.  You can go into the database, find the "PortalAlias" table, and add a new alias matching the new address for that portal id (likely portal 0).  So something like follows:

x.x.x.21/dnn as well as x.x.x.21 (each separate rows).  Reset IIS or recycle the app pool after that, and now you should be able to browse your portal once again.

Wow, that worked like a dream. I never would have figured that one out. Thanks a million. I guess I have to learn a bit more about the portal alias settings.
