Could it be that there is a connection string error in the web.config file?

Well if there is an error in the connection string it works in 4.4.  I copied the connection string over without modification just like the instructions told me to.  It works in 4.4, but dies on the upgrade.  Could it be that the upgrade instructions are incomplete, or inaccurate?

I personally did all updates with the 'auto' option then everything ran over the web.config (and all updates worked fine - XP and W2K3 systems). In the beginning as far the install wizard was released, I tried other configurations and I had servere troubles (errors and databases corrupted). I had no time to feel out was wrong, so I decided to update with the 'auto' option.

The exceptions you got did they happen before the install wizard pages started or during the update process?

This happened before any pages displayed.  I am thinking about just whacking the upgrade and starting over with a fresh everything.  It just pains me to think that and upgrade is such a hassle.  Thank goodness it is a dev system.  I could not bring myself to try it on a production machine.
