I currently have 04.05.03 installed and working mostly correct.  I have a few small issues of which some were fixed in the new 04.05.04 release, such as login redirect issue.  I want to upgrade to the new version, and looked through many postings to see how to do this.  I did come across some directions that were posted at the following URL:

http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/AboutDotnetNuke/V3V4TippsTricks/Upgradedurchführen/tabid/186/Default.aspx

Now those directions look fine, but I am confused.  It seems as though if i do the upgrade I will have to reinstall all 3rd party modules, is that right?  I have worked so hard (through much trial and error, and forum postings, etc) to finally get the current installation stable, and to think I would have to reinstall these modules, would be a very scary thing for me.  I may be misunderstanding the directions, so please advise me on if this is the case.  If so, I would rather manually make some the patch fixes, such as the redirect login problem.  Is there a way for me to see exactly what ws fixed in the code?  I mean I can see in the release notes the original problem, but it doesn't say the resolution, except that its fixed in the newest release.

Possibly the answers to my questions, may help other newbies like myself to understand the upgrade process.

Thank you for your help.
James

no, you do not need to reinstall modules, only newly added ones and upgraded versions.

As mentioned above you do not have to re-install any existing modules.  I also have an upgrade guide on my website that goes over the topic as well.

In regards to the upgrade and what is changed.  As of this time there is not a lot of detail surrounding the exact files that have changed that is directly noticable.  Some individuals find this out by comparing the source between versions and others just don't pay attention.  But you can have changes in many locations including any of the front end .aspx and .ascx files and the related code-behinds as well as changes that are compiled into the dotnetnuke.dll
