I am just about on the verge of giving up with this... But I'd be mighty grateful if I could get answers to these questions:

Background: I'm trying to set up a website using fasthost to do my hosting. I have created a database and requested dynamic something but now I'm stumped. I'm using a Virtual PC on a Mac (Parallels Desktop)

1. Do I need to have Visual Studio 2005 installed on my computer to get this working?
2. I downloaded the Install.zip & copied all the files onto my bit of the server.
3. I can see the Install/install.aspx on the server but how do you run it?
4. I have tried editing my web.config file but I don't seem to have all the information I need - can someone tell me the exact changes that need to be made i.e. where I put my server name, db name, user name & password? Will I still need to do this if the installer works?
5. At the moment I get an error 404 when I go to my URL.

What am I missing? The docs talking about pressing CTRL-F5 but where do you press these keys?

I get the idea that the install is supposed to happen when you go to the URL but what do you need to do first?

I don't understand what needs to be on my computer and what needs to go on the server.

I really like the look of this product and am desperate to get it working but I feel that I am missing a vital concept.

1. no, only for module developement

2. correct, don't forget to adjust permissions for user ASPNET or Network Service

3. set up IIS correctly and call www.mydomain.com

4. these changes will be made by the installer

please refer to the installation guide available from resources >> documentation page here on dotnetnuke.com

Thank-you very much.

The bit I don't understand is 2. 'adjusting permissions fot ussr ASPNET or Network service.

Instead of getting error 404 when I go to my URL, I'm getting:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

If I try and run install.aspx I get a runtime error.

I do think I'm nearly there & I can't wait!

OK great, thnak-you. I thought I replied to this eraly but I can't see it anywhere. I've looked at the docs but I still have the following questions as I don't understand some of the the terms used:

2. What adjustments do I need to make to permissions for user ASPNET or Network Service?

3. IIS - is this configured on the server? I can't see anyway into it? Where is it?

3.1 The docs say 'create virtual directory in IIS' what does this mean? Does it just mean I should create a folder called 'dnn' on my web space?

3.2 The docs say the folder should 'point to where the dnn .vbproj file exists'. How does a folder point to something?

3.3 Make sure default.aspx is specified as the default document in the default directory - how do you do this?

Sorry to be so dumb about this but I just don't understand the language used...

Thank-you Leupold

OK I have the answer: I can't access the IIS with my current host so dnn won't work unless I have a dedicated server. So I guess that's the end of the story for a but. My host said they do support but they don't.
