for a new installation unzip it into folder on the web server, but make sure, to point IIS virtual directory / web site to "website" subfolder

to update an existing DNN installation from install package, unzip to parent of current web site folder.

Thank you for your respond. I am still having the same problem

here is what i did:

1- I unziped the DotNetNuke 4.5.5 -(Source Package that  Contains everything, including full application source code) to a file (DDNSource) in my wwwroot.

2- then under DDNSource/website/ i renamed the release.config to web.config

3- i made sure the IIS is configured properly.

4- build the DDNSource project and i get this error:

Error 101 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DDNSource\Website\web.config 58

I am pretty sure my virtual directory is configured properly.

Note: I did install the (Install Package  -  Contains only the files needed for a run-time deployment to a web server) first which worked without any problems.

Thank you

Did you setup IIS to use .Net 2.0 instead of .Net 1.1? Did you point IIS to the WEBSITE folder of the Source package you extracted?

Thank you christoc for your respond here is what i did (i am not sure if this is the correct way)

This is what I did the first time but something was messing therefore, I did the whole thing a gain. Here is what I did

1-     after unzipping the source.zip I extracted whatever is inside the website folder to a

2-     new folder called DNNTest

3-     I placed this folder in the wwwroot

4-     I configured the IIS to point to DNNTest

5-     I renamed the release.cofig file to web.config (is this step correct)?

Finally it worked this way, however, I have a question

After I manually executed the script by typing

http://DNNTest/Install/instal.aspx

I logged in as a host then downloaded all the available modules for the host menu option. Then when I tried to built the project again I got these errors (this only happened when I downloaded the available modules:

Error          102      Error parsing attribute 'enableEventValidation': Could not load file or assembly 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Gallery, Version=3.0.11.3077, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.      c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DNNTest\DesktopModules\Forum\Integration\Integration_GalleryAddAlbum.aspx

The system cannot find the file specified.      c:\inetpub\wwwroot\DNNTest\DesktopModules\Forum\Integration\Integration_GalleryAddFile.aspx     4

Error          115      Type 'PagerDetail' is not defined.

Error          120      Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): Element 'html' is missing

And more errors

Also is this the right way to download the source.zip package and do I need to rename my web.config file back to it’s original name release.config(when I did that I got 103 erros)

    Thank you for your help
