I've searched on the forums, and see lots of issues with moving dotnetnuke around from one server to another, but no explanation of the machinekey importance in dotnetnuke. When I try to search in the past, I get ciritcal error/timeout erros on this forum, grrr.

So, on a new install in a "medium-trust" level environment (shared hosting), do I need to change the "machinekey" or not? If I do, how do I generate it, or what do I enter? Thanks.

If you're setting up DNN for the first time it will automagically configure a new machinekey for you. If you've already setup DNN and are moving a site, do not change the machinekey or you won't be able to login to the site.

Very important: when you update your DNN installation save your web.config and insert the initial machine key in the new one

I am having issues with changing providers where I am the only person that can log on. THought I had is solved but then it jumped up and bit me.  The machine key. Do I use the one from previous site or do I use the one from the new fresh site before I overlay the backup? or shold I use a blank database and let backup reinstall?

Thanks
