Hi, I'm new to Windows Server 2003 and ASP world. I switched from Linux and MySql.
I thought that it wil be easier to work with new platforms, oh boy I was wrong.
In any professional Linux- php/mysql installer I could create a database easily by entering just localhost, database name and user/pass and , voila script. ready to go.
Why dotnetnuke intaller does not creating necessary database itself?
I myself have no idea how to create database. I have own Windows 2003 server, I searched the help, I searched the Internet.
I could not find nowhere simple answer to simple question.
How to create sql dtabase on Windows 2003 server?
Appreciate any help of you.
thank you
jerzy

Hi Jerzy - it's funny you say that about the ease with Linux and MySQL - I found the same problem with php and could never get it to work.

It sounds like to me you don't have SQL installed on your system - you've mentioned everything else.. can you confirm you have SQL 2000 installed on your Windows 2003 installation.  When we say Create A Database, we're not actually talking about creating THE database it's working on - The assumption is that you have SQL or MSDE - like a light version of SQL installed so that when you Create A Database, the installation process actually has something to build the tables in.

Does that makes sense?

So firstly, can you confirm you have an installation of SQL or MSDE running?  I know it might sound like an odd question, but no where do you mention that in part of your question, and unless you've got installed, you will never be able to create a DNN site.

Sounds like you and I came from the same place. I just did this last night and I was having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to "create" a database. What I found out was I had to download a database manager from MS that did not install with SQL server when I installed it. That allows you the SQL manager peice to modify the database's on the SQL server itself. Just go to microsoft.com\SQL and go to downloads in techcenter.

Click on the link for • Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP

That's what I used and it made a lot more sense. However during the install there were some security things with the use id for the database I had to work out first. It took me some time but I got it from some other questions here in the forums. Keep them around you will need them to get everything working.

Who would know that Windows 2003 server would come without any SQL, which supposedly should be a part of system

Anyway, I have installed SQL 2005 Server Express Edition from Microsoft site. Free at least.

It is running.

Therefore, I got this far. Still there is no way to find how create dotnetnuke database.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jerzy

You still need to install the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP ...

This is a manegement tool for accessing the SQL databases and making changes doing query's and such.

It is possible to do it from a command line, but this tool is a nice gui interface to allow you to create the DNNNUKE db. Once you do that you can run the dnn install and it will create all the tables for you.

With out this tool you would have to use sql command lines to create the database.

The SQL server install does not include this tool at all.
