I have a DNN upgrade I need to do on a production site.  What kind of dangers are there of doing an upgrade if a user might happen to browse to the site during the proceedure?  How can you avoid problems?

you have to make sure, that the site is offline from the beginning of the initial backup until the site is upgraded and checked to run as expected.

Yes, a user visiting the site 1/2 way through the file upload could cause major problems.

I recommend placing an app_offline.htm file in your root directory, this will take the site offline and display that page for ALL content on your site.  That way you can give the users a nice message and complete the file transfer, then you can delete the file and run the upgrade.

Please see my site for a full instruction set for upgrading DNN.
