I upgraded from 4.3 to 4.7.  This is on a shared hosting account.  The site works but I can not login anymore with the existing accounts.  I created a new user account and I can login.  I need to get back my admin login!   I updated the connection string in the new web.config and that is working.  I check the authentication and membership provider and they match my old web.config -- actually unchanged from the DNN defaults.

Any ideas on what is wrong?

It sounds like you didn't copy the machine keys from your old web.config to the new one.

That fixed it.  Thanks.  Here are the steps I used to upgrade a basic DNN site:

  1. Download the update package
  2. Unzip to a local folder
  3. backup the old web.config
  4. update the release.config file with the connection string and machine keys (2 entries) from the old web.config
  5. rename release.config to web.config
  6. FTP the local contents to the web site and replace existing files
  7. start web site and watch the upgrade script run

I'm glad that worked for other.  I did copy the machine keys and setup the connection strings but.....

I can only log in with all user accounts not Admin or Host......nor any other user that has admin rights.

I've upgrade from 4.3.7.  I've rolled back the site and db several times and tried various methods to upgrade, including stepping thru intermediate upgrades.  I've also verifed that ASPNET and Netword Service has the correct permissions.  Admin login repeatedly fails once finally upgraded to 4.7.

any ideas on  what else I can try?
