Getting this set up had to be one of the most difficult challenges that I've ever set myself. I'm so tempted to stick with using MS Frontpage. Why do you make it so confusing?

I'm not an IT geek, just an ordinary guy who wants to build a nice website for a local cycling group. Having read that DNN is 'really simple!', 'installed in minutes!', etc, I thought I'd go with it.

Please bear in mind that not everyone who wants to build a wesite has the same ability as yourself. I've spent around 6 hours so far and I'm still struggling, in fact if it wasn't for the adef site I'd still be a lot further back.

Is there anyone out there who I can physically speak to? Anyone in the UK would be even better. sicky2000-test@yahoo.co.uk

mabe you should try using the installer utility (see associated project's download page). it does not contain latest version, but you can easily upgrade afterwards.

There's nothing easy about it all unless you're already well-trained in the half a dozen or so technologies involved.  "Easy for experts" is what it should be called. In any case.. you're facing a steep learning curve.

Some hosting environments are totally unsuitable for it as you really need a good control panel with tools for file security, creating databases, setting asp.net version, domain pointers and other bits and pieces. You can continue to use Frontpage 2003 or Expression Web for managing the DNN files and working on the code, in fact I hugely recommend it over FTP.

So the first question is.. what's your hosting situation... and then.. perhaps check one of my older posts:

Scroll half-way down the page, look for the longest post there. It will have some clues.

I found Lee's videos over at DNN Creative to be quite helpful when first trying to get DNN installed properly; he has videos for installing on local IIS and in a hosting environment (and hundreds of others to help you learn your way around the platform).  Without the videos and other resources out there (check out Mitchel Seller's blog for some great install info), I would have never figured it out either. I feel your pain, sir.

I will say, though, that it gets easier over time and with lots of practice. :)  After about a dozen installs and updates, I finally feel quite confident grabbing the files, setting up my hosting environment, and letting 'er rip without looking at any of my 'cheat sheets.'

I do think the install wizard has make it considerably easier when just starting out...so they are moving in the right direction.

PS...think I remember an install guide here on DNN somewhere that was good, too, but was unable to find it.  I think a sticky with all the FAQ and info in the 'Install Forums' would serve the community well...a nice step-by-step with screenshots and supporting information.

As mentioned above, sadly due to the number of technologies required the setup is a bit tricky to complete at first, but you will get the hang of it.

Have a look at my installation guides at http://www.mitchelsellers.com they might help!
