Hi All, Hope someone can help and give some advice.

I am trying to set up DNN at hosting4usa

Their setup is:

a)Windows 2003 Servers
b)IIS ver 6.0
c) MS SQL Server 2000
d) .NET 1.1

I have copied all files to my root directory as instructed.
I have set up a MS SQL 2000 database

When I try Install from my browser, I am getting the following two error messages:

ERROR MSG #01
Access to the path "C:\webspace\hosting4usa\address\address\www\Install\Install.htm" is denied.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "C:\webspace\hosting4usa\address\address\www\Install\Install.htm" is denied.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "C:\webspace\hosting4usa\hotcat\hooreyca.com\www\Install\Install.htm" is denied.]
   System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String str) +393
   System.IO.File.InternalCopy(String sourceFileName, String destFileName, Boolean overwrite) +345
   DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.HtmlUtils.WriteHeader(HttpResponse response, String mode) +175
   DotNetNuke.Framework.Install.NoUpgrade() +779
   DotNetNuke.Framework.Install.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) +382
   System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) +67
   System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() +35
   System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain() +750
ERROR MESSAGE #02

Cannot replicate now but it says something like

The SQL Server either does not exist or access is denied

Thanks in advance for your help from a clueless 'newbie'

Looks like IIS permissions are not set up right on the hosts end.  You'll need to get them to correct that or find out if you are only allowed to host asp .net applications from a directory under your root directory.  You might also have a problem with your connection string to the database.

I'm having a similar issue myself. But I am setting this up locally on my PC. I am logged in using my user name on the domain for my work place. My username account in my domain is setup as an administrator. That same user name is setup as an administrator on the computer itself. I have allowed the ASP .NET full permissions on my DotNetNUke directory and my C:\Windows\Microsoft .Net directory.

I am still getting this same exception along with the error message:

Access to the path "c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\dnn3013\061a0da9\5fe28e3f" is denied.

Note that dnn3013\061a0da9\5fe28e3f does not exist when I got to check it. I have given the c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\ folder write permissions and the ASP .NET user full permissions.

I am really stumped here. What settings in IIS could be off? (I'm using IIS 5.0)

Did you ever resolve this error?  I am having the same problem.

I think the solution was to correct my default starting document in my IIS set up. I had it set to Default.ascx when it should have been Default.aspx. I hope this helps.

On a side note--and this has usually worked for me if my installation has gone bad for whatever reason, you could reinstall your version of dotnetnuke and then have it point to the databases that were used by the current version you are having issues with. DO NOT DELETE THE DATABASE YOU ARE USING NOW. Simply back those up or take them offline if need be, until you get to the point in your install where you can restore them.

Also idea that works with this philosophy is that right after you install your portal and have that part working, zip that folder up so that you don't have to go through the install process again. If something goes wrong, you simply delete your current install and replace it with the previously zipped folder.

I will say that I can't be held accountable should these solutions mess you up. They are honest, heart felt suggestions that might fix your issue, but they could also make it worse (simply accounting for the unknown factors that play into this). Use at your own risk.

I hope that helps.

Sincerely,

jbaisden
