I tried to upgrade my 4.04 DNN site to 4.08 and now 4 of the 5 portals don't come up at all.

They all have the same error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.SkinDefaults..ctor(SkinDefaultType DefaultType) +189

The one portal that is working fine is Portals/0.

I am using a hosting service, and when I upgraded, I deleted everything in my remote DNN folder, locally unzipped the Install file, modified the web.config to keep the original machine keys and connection string, then copied everything to my remote DNN folder.  When I browsed the the website for Portals/0 I got the installation page that said everything completed successfully.  I browsed to the site and everything worked (after I downloaded and installed all the modules), but the other 4 sites never came up.

Please help!

Any custom or third party modules used?  They would have been deleted when you deleted the folder structure, and need to be reinstalled.  Also any web.config settings that may have changed besides the connection string and keys may need to be edited.

No custom modules, and I checked through the web.config for differences ... there's an entirely new <system.webserver> section and a couple more entries in <codeSubDirectories>, but changing those just made it so I couldn't access ANY of the portals.

So I tried to delete and re-create one of the broken portals.  On the add portal page I got an error message that said that the portal was created successfully but the email address specified for the administrator did not exist (but the email should be fine).  However, when I go to the new site I get the same "object reference not set" error message as before!  Now I can't even create a new portal!

I'm using WebHost4Life as my hosting provider.  Could that make a difference?

I think my next step will be to just restore the backup of the original :(

Deleted all files in DNN directory, restored backed up DNN folder and database, and I'm back to 4.5.3 with no major issues so far.  Maybe I'll try upgrading again later.
