girlleo,

I recommend that you always post a new thread with your error. Here only a couple of people will read it. Most of the other readers will be those that have the same or similar problem and you want to expose your issue to a wider audience.

The issue on this thread as I said, was that SQL was configured to use Windows authentication while the user was trying SQL authentication. The connectionstring format in web.config must match what is being used for SQL.

Do you know the truth when you hear it?

Girlleo,

Your connection string is commented out.  Remove the <!--  --> (with DNN4 two spots) and you should be good.

Cheers,

Paul Davis

I am an experienced developer and system admin.  I am new to DotNetNuke,
but chose it because it seems popular.  I like the potential features.

To the Point:
It took me approximately 4 days to get DNN installed and working.
I agree with the documentation comments, it could be much better.
There should be Quick install guides that point you to exactly to what
needs to be done for specific configurations.  The included documentation
goes into too much irrelavant details.

My Configuration:
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition.
SQL Server 2000
DNN 4.0.2

Some problems I faced were:
1) It would not run on Windows 2003K Server Enterprise Edition R2
2) I tried to move the virtual directory location.  Apparently
settings are stored in the database as to location.  I had to delete
and create a new database to get it to work.
3) Error - "SiteURL.config" file not found.  Again this was cleared up
after recreating the database.  Copying the file from the config directory
did not work for me.
4) After getting it to work.  I could not access the site from another
machine.  This is a HUGE area were the documentation falls short.
The doc refers to altering the HTTPalias in the webconfig.file. There
is no such setting in 4.0.2.  It has to be done from the settings option
in the portal. Second HUGE area of documentation failure.  Logging in
as Admin does not present the Alias option.  Only logging in as "Host"
presents this option.

In closing:  I really want to use the product.
It looks impressive. The initial issues
have me very afraid of finding other hurdles that will take days to solve.

I have to agree here. I have tried several suggestions over several days, and I still can't get DNN to work on my main webserver. It works just fine from within the Visual Studio environment, but no way can I publish it or install from the setup package or anything else, it simply gives me permission errors on the webserver.

I am happy to admit that it probably is something I have futzed up, but I create the portal and the database as per the instructions, then I set the permissions, and doublecheck the web.config... and it simply will not work. I have completely un-installed and re-installed several times, no luck.

I have Windows Enterprise server 2003, IIS6 and SQL 2005, which should work fine.

I am not completely clueless, I was able to get a php-based forum and MySQL working just fine. I work in the field and have managed servers since the win 3.51 days and earlier. I can compile the DNN source in Visual Studio 2005 and it works just fine with the remote SQL and the SQL Express.

To be fair, I think my problems are mostly related to proper setup/config/security with .net and IIS6, not DNN issues per se. However, even Google searches have not helped much for that. I tend to agree with the poster who suggested that any configuration of IIS or permissions that are necessary to get DNN running ought to be mentioned in the installation docs. I'm happy to help document this, based on my experiences, and that should make the job easier for other DNN noobs like me.

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. A package this comprehensive (for free!) is certainly worth a bit of teething pains, and I am grateful for it. But there is no way that this is a 5 minute install without some sort of install script that will check (and configure) each and every thing that needs to be done on the server. Now, after the server is config'ed, it is quite possible that my users will be able to install a portal on their website in 5 minutes.... and that is an intriguing idea.
